Transport links
Northumberland's primary transport links include the East Coast Main Line, with main stations at Berwick-upon-Tweed and Alnmouth. Berwick to London King's Cross is approximately 3.5 hours. The county is served by the A1(M) and A1 trunk road, with the A69 providing a key east-west link. Newcastle International Airport, located just south of the county border, is the nearest airport. Coastal ports include Blyth and the ferry terminal at North Shields for services to Amsterdam.
Living in Northumberland
Northumberland lies in the north east of England. It borders the Scottish Borders to the north and Cumbria to the west, with County Durham and Tyne and Wear to the south and the North Sea along its eastern side. Its history is visible across the landscape: Hadrian's Wall runs through the county and Northumberland has more castles than any other county in England. The Northumberland Coast is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The largest towns lie in the south east of the county. Blyth is the largest town in Northumberland. It grew on coal mining and shipbuilding, which have largely disappeared, but its port remains one of the principal ports of north east England. The town has a beach and a promenade with a row of brightly painted beach huts.
Ashington grew from a small hamlet in the 1840s into a coal mining town. Its pit closed in 1988 and the mining history of the area is told at the museum at Woodhorn, a former colliery. To the north of the town, the Queen Elizabeth II Country Park has a lake set in pine woodland. The reopened Northumberland Line now runs passenger trains from Ashington and Blyth to Newcastle upon Tyne.
Newbiggin-by-the-Sea has a long fishing history, which is presented at the Newbiggin Maritime Centre. Sean Henry's brass sculpture Couple is anchored in the centre of the bay, while the thirteenth-century St Bartholomew's Church looks out over the North Sea from Church Point. Inland, Plessey Woods Country Park covers 100 acres of woodland, meadow and riverside on the north bank of the River Blyth, south west of Bedlington.
Further north, Alnwick Castle is the home of the Duke of Northumberland and his family. Its exterior and interior were used for Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films.
A coastline of national standing, open countryside and a long history, together with rail links to Newcastle from the south east of the county, explain why many people choose to live in Northumberland.
Schools in Northumberland
Northumberland has 127 primary schools, spread across its towns and rural communities. There are 27 secondary schools. The largest by roll are Bede Academy, a Christian academy with a sixth form, Cramlington Learning Village, Ponteland High School, The King Edward VI School and Queen Elizabeth High School, each of which is an academy with a sixth form. The county has one grammar school, Howard House School. Two independent schools and 11 special schools also serve the area. There are no further education colleges within Northumberland.
