A short history of Hexham
Queen Æthelthryth granted Saint Wilfrid land at Hexham for a church in 671 or 672 and he founded a monastery there in 674 that became Hexham Abbey. The crypt of that first monastery survives and includes stones from Roman ruins nearby. The name is thought to come from Old English forms such as Hagustaldes ham, though the later medieval Hextildesham may honour Hextilda of Tynedale, who lived from 1122 to 1182. The border wars brought William Wallace's burning of the town in 1297, a payment of £2000 to Robert the Bruce in 1312 and the sacking of the monastery in 1346. The Battle of Hexham followed in 1464, after which the Duke of Somerset was executed in the marketplace. Hexham was the administrative centre of Hexhamshire until 1572. James Radclyffe raised the standard for James Francis Edward Stuart in the Market Place in 1715 and in 1761 troops fired on a crowd protesting about militia service there, killing some 45. The town has 200 listed buildings, including five at Grade I such as the Priory Church of St Andrew, the Moot Hall and the Manor Office.
