A short history of Cramlington
The name points to a likely Danish or Anglo-Saxon origin. The Manor of Cramlington first appears in records in 1135 as a grant to Nicholas de Grenville and a series of early chaplains starts with John the Clerk of Cramlington around 1163. Life stayed mostly rural until coal mining arrived in the early 19th century. An explosion at Collingwood Main Colliery in 1813 killed eight people. A rail accident followed in 1855 and the Gothic church of St. Nicholas was built between 1865 and 1868. During the First World War the town became a base for aircraft and airships. The Flying Scotsman was derailed in 1926 during the General Strike. A new town was first envisaged in 1958 and proclaimed in 1964 when William Leech and J.T. Bell built large housing estates. Iron Age remains were found in 2017. Nine Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre.
