A short history of Prudhoe
The name Prudhoe comes from an Anglo-Saxon personal name, Prud, linked to a word for proud, combined with a term for a spur of land. A castle has stood here for a very long time, in years when England and Scotland were at war. Scots under William Wallace ravaged Northumberland in 1297, travelling from Hexham to the edge of Newcastle and setting fire to Prudhoe and other towns. The castle was first held by the d'Umfraville family and later by the Percys. It is regarded as the sole medieval stronghold in Northumberland that the Scots never captured. A drill hall for the Territorial Army was established on Swalwell Close in 1914 as the base for a company from the 4th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers. A Royal Observer Corps underground monitoring post operated from June 1962 until September 1991. The castle is listed Grade I and is also a scheduled monument and there are four listed buildings near the centre in total, the other three being Grade II.
