The name Ponteland is first recorded in 1256 and refers to an island or farmland by the River Pont, a river name derived from a Brittonic word for valley. In 1388 Scottish forces destroyed part of Ponteland Castle before the Battle of Otterburn. The castle was never rebuilt as a stronghold and later became the public house known as The Blackbird. Parish registers start in 1602. A Methodist church opened in 1841 and an Anglican church followed at Milbourne in 1867. Darras Hall grew during the industrial era and housed prisoner-of-war camp number 69 in the Second World War. Five Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre, including Vicarage Tower. The medieval Vicar's Pele, a tower house on Main Street, is a scheduled monument.
