A short history of Alnwick
Alnwick dates to about AD 600 and takes its name from the River Aln and an Old English word for a dairy farm or settlement. Malcolm III of Scotland was killed at the first Battle of Alnwick in 1093 and Ivo de Vesci founded a timber castle around 1096. Alnwick Abbey was founded in 1147 with the castle rebuilt in stone at about that time. The estate passed to the Percys in 1309. Scottish raiders burnt much of the town in 1424 and 1448 and walls followed in the 15th century. The castle changed hands repeatedly between 1461 and 1463 during the Wars of the Roses. The abbey was suppressed in 1539 and the Percys returned to live at Alnwick in the mid-18th century. Of 217 listed buildings near the centre five are Grade I: the Castle, Town Hall, Percy Tenantry Column, Northumberland Hall and Bondgate Tower.
