A short history of SE27

West Norwood takes its name from the Great North Wood, a wooded and hilly area north of Croydon and until 1885 the district around the station was called Lower Norwood. Land at Knight's Hill belonged to Thomas Knyght in 1545. John Rocque's map of 1745 shows the Horns Tavern at Knight's Hill, with a largely undeveloped valley beyond. St Luke's Church was completed in 1825 under the Waterloo church scheme. In 1837 the South Metropolitan Cemetery was created, mainly for people from crowded areas nearer central London. The railway to the Crystal Palace opened in 1856, after which many large houses and gardens gave way to more modest housing. The Norwood Home for Jewish Children was completed in 1862. The Regal cinema opened in 1930 and bomb damage in both world wars led to extensive post-war council estates. The area has 100 listed buildings, nine of them Grade II*, including St Luke's Church and several tombs and a mausoleum in West Norwood Memorial Park.
