A short history of CR7

Thornton Heath lay in the ancient parish of Croydon and at the time of the Norman invasion the Domesday Book listed Croydon with a church and a mill along with roughly 365 residents. Before the railway arrived in 1862 the settlement centred on Thornton Heath Pond on the main London to Sussex road, about 1.5 miles southwest of the Whitehorse manor house. An isolated farmhouse stood between the two and its site later became the railway station. From 1861 to 1911 the area changed from a rural outpost into a London suburb. Farmland in the east grew around the station while the western part spread along the main road. Thornton Heath belonged to the County Borough of Croydon until 1965. Nine listed buildings stand nearby, all Grade II.
