A short history of SE24

Herne Hill formed part of the Manor of Milkwell, which is recorded as far back as 1291 and it stayed a mix of farmland and woodland until late in the 1700s, shared between the old parishes of Camberwell and Lambeth. A map of 1746 labels the area Island Green, probably after the River Effra and its smaller tributaries and early references also give Ireland Green. In 1783 the timber merchant Samuel Sanders bought the land covering Herne Hill and Denmark Hill from the Manor and began leasing large plots to wealthy families. The name Herne Hill first appears in two fire insurance policies of 1792. By the mid-19th century villas in spacious grounds lined the road towards Denmark Hill and John Ruskin spent his childhood in one until 1842. The London, Chatham & Dover Railway arrived in 1862 and terraced streets soon covered the old estates. Five V-1 flying bombs fell nearby in the Second World War, causing six deaths. The district has 73 listed buildings, five of them Grade II*, including the Church of St Matthew, the Church of St Paul, Brockwell Hall and the Half Moon Public House.
