In the 1640s springs in what is now Wells Park were found to have medicinal properties and drew crowds. The Croydon Canal opened in 1809 and spurred rapid growth, but it closed in 1836 and was bought for a railway that opened in 1839. In 1854 the Crystal Palace was rebuilt on Sydenham Hill and the district became fashionable with many new houses. Camille Pissarro painted The Avenue, Sydenham in 1871. The Palace burned down on 30 November 1936. Sydenham suffered wartime attacks, which destroyed some homes. Of the 36 listed buildings nearby, the Church Of St Bartholomew is Grade II* and the other 35 are Grade II.
