The name Brixton is thought to come from Brixistane, the stone of a Saxon lord called Brixi, possibly marking the meeting place of a hundred court. Stockwell probably takes its name from a well beside a tree trunk. From the thirteenth century it was a rural manor. The Manor of Lambeth was enclosed in 1806 and Vauxhall Bridge opened in 1816, after which terraced houses and villas lined the main roads. Brixton gained rail links in 1862 and a building boom followed, with Bon Marché opening in 1877. Stockwell belonged to Surrey until 1889. The Sunlight Laundry was erected in 1937 and wartime bombing later contributed to a housing crisis, followed by council housing. The district has 257 listed buildings.
