In 1810 Tulse Hill Farm stood alone as a building across the western side of the area. Two new roads were laid out by 1821 and adopted in 1822. By 1843 mostly detached houses lined the lower road. The 1860s railway stations brought major growth further east. Until the late 19th century the Brixton Hill road was known as Brixton Causeway.
