A short history of RM3
The district covers Harold Wood and Harold Hill. Harold Wood took its name from King Harold Godwinson, who possessed the surrounding manor of Havering-atte-Bower and it was recorded as Horalds Wood around 1237. The land lay in the ancient parish of Hornchurch, which matched the royal liberty of Havering. Around Harold Hill the manor was divided into Dagnams, Cockerells and Gooshays. The liberty was abolished in 1892 and the area returned to Essex. After the rest of Dagnams was sold in 1919 and Hornchurch became an urban district in 1926, suburban house building raised the population. The London County Council bought the remaining 850 acres of Dagnams in 1947. Between 1948 and 1958 it built Harold Hill, starting with prefabricated housing and finishing with 7,631 permanent homes. The area joined Greater London in 1965. Two Grade II listed buildings are nearby: The Grange at Harold Wood Hospital and The Morris Dancer Public House.
