A short history of RM2

Thomas Cooke became Mayor of London in 1462 and received a charter for the Royal Liberty of Havering-atte-Bower. He began a country house called Geddy Hall, a name drawn from words for pike and water. He was confined several times over treason charges, so the house stood unfinished for at least a century. After his death in 1478 the estate passed down the family to Anthony Cooke, tutor to Edward VI, who completed the house as Gidea Hall. Richard Emes bought it in 1657 and after the Restoration the Crown purchased it back. The estate was later sold at auction not long before Queen Victoria was crowned. In 1909 three Liberal MPs set up a company to build a garden suburb on the land. Romford Garden Suburb was built in 1910 and 1911 with 159 houses and cottages by over 100 architects. St Michael's Church was added in 1931 and the area became a conservation area in 1970.
