A short history of RM1

The earliest record of the place dates from 1177, when it appeared as Romfort, a name meaning a wide or spacious ford and most likely referring to where the London to Colchester road crossed the River Rom. Romford Market was established in 1247. The town first stood to the south in an area called Oldchurch before moving north in the later medieval period to avoid flooding. In 1406 Henry IV gave permission for a lasting church where the Church of St Edward the Confessor now stands. A charter of 1465 created the independent liberty of Havering. The Middlesex and Essex Turnpike Trust looked after the London road from 1721 and the town served as a coaching centre during the 1700s. The railway station opened in 1839 and sped the town's growth. Romford became a municipal borough in 1937. That year Thomas England gave the council 23 acres at Rise Park for a park and 400 houses for private sale were built there after a compulsory purchase order was blocked in 1953. Twelve listed buildings lie nearby with St Edward the Confessor the highest graded at Grade II*.
