A short history of RM7

The name appears in 1177 as Romfort, from Old English words for a broad ford, probably where the London to Colchester road met the river. A market began in 1247. The town first stood to the south at Oldchurch and moved north later in the Middle Ages to escape flooding by the River Rom. Henry IV allowed a lasting church in 1406 on the site of the Church of St Edward the Confessor. A charter of 1465 made Havering a separate liberty. The Middlesex and Essex Turnpike Trust took over the London road in 1721 and coaching grew important there in the 18th century. The railway station opened in 1839 and a separate parish followed in 1849. Municipal borough status came in 1937 and the London Borough of Havering followed in 1965. Ten listed buildings stand near the centre with the parish church the highest graded at Grade II*.
