A short history of N20

In the 13th century Totteridge went by the name Tataridge, which may refer to a person called Tata. A gate made into the Bishop of London's park in 1340 allowed a straight route across Finchley Common. A Hospitallers' settlement in Friern Barnet then moved west and was recorded as le Weston in 1398 and later as Wheston in 1417 and Whetstonestret in 1439. Legend says soldiers used the Whetstone on their march to the battle of Barnet in 1471. About 1730 the Whetstone & Highgate Turnpike Trust built a toll gate and the stone may have been a mounting block linked to it. Cardinal Manning's birth in 1808 took place at Copped Hall in Totteridge. The stone was moved to its present spot in 1863 once the toll gate had gone. A railway station opened in 1872 and mansions were built around Totteridge. Much of Totteridge became a Conservation Area in 1968. Fourteen listed buildings stand near the centre of the district, all Grade II.
