A short history of N2

East Finchley was first mentioned in 1365 as a scattered hamlet known as East End. Around 1400 much of its land was recorded as the Bishop of London's hunting ground and The Bishop's Avenue was later built through it. The Old White Lion, Bald Faced Stag and Five Bells pubs grew up beside the road running north. Bulls Lane, now Church Lane, existed by the 17th century. Fortis Green stayed rural until the 19th century. Part of Hornsey Common was divided into plots in 1815 and in 1820 the Bishop sold a field where Fairlawn, Cranleigh, Park Hall and Summerlee were built. Anthony Salvin built Springcroft and Colethall in 1835. By 1860 East Finchley was the most populous part of Finchley. Building continued gradually from the 1870s to the 1930s. Bombing in the Second World War destroyed the Old Village street pattern. The area has 43 listed buildings, all Grade II.
