A short history of EN4

Land in the Hadley Wood area, once part of the hunting ground of Enfield Chase, has been held by the monarch since 1399 and some is still owned by the Duchy of Lancaster. The name Cockfosters was recorded in 1524 and may come from a family or a house on the Chase. Enfield Chase was divided and sold in 1777 and Francis Russell bought 152 acres and built a mansion at Beech Hill Park. Charles Jack acquired that estate in 1854. By 1867 a village lay along Cockfosters Road. In the 1880s Jack arranged a railway station that gave Hadley Wood its name and over 60 dwellings stood by 1901. St Paul's chapel opened in 1911 and the mansion site became a golf club in the early 1920s. The Piccadilly Line brought a housebuilding boom to Cockfosters from 1933 and Trent Park held senior German prisoners during the Second World War. All 11 listed buildings nearby are Grade II.
