By the 11th century the Bishop of London held Finchley's lands, though the district does not appear in Domesday Book. The area was then sparsely populated woodland that supplied London with pigs and fuel. The church of St Mary-at-Finchley was founded in the 12th century. The name Finchley probably means a clearing linked with finches and first appears in writing in the early 1200s. The church is mentioned in documents from the 1270s. Church End took its name in 1683 from its position beside the parish church. A turnpike road authorised in 1826 replaced the old Ducksetters Lane. The Edgware, Highgate and London Railway reached Finchley in 1867. In 1904 Finchley acquired Britain's earliest motorised fire engine while in 1910 Finchley Garden Village was laid out around a green. Thirty-nine listed buildings stand nearby. The highest graded, at Grade II*, are La Délivrance, the Parish Church of St Mary and The Manor House.
