A short history of N11

Friern Barnet was first part of Barnet and by the 13th century its Middlesex portion was Little Barnet. Friern comes from a French word for brother and relates to the Knights of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. From 1409 title deeds called the western part Colney Hatch. The Colney Hatch asylum opened in 1851 and with railways prompted suburban growth. The name New Southgate appears in the 1850s and replaced Colney Hatch in local organisations. George Gilbert Scott directed the building of St Paul's Church, consecrated in 1873. Bombing damaged the church in 1944 and repairs ended by 1957. Friern Barnet joined the London Borough of Barnet in 1965. The hospital closed in 1993 and the site became Princess Park Manor and Friern Village. Ten listed buildings stand nearby with Church of St John the Evangelist and Arnos Grove Underground Station graded II*.
