A short history of N10
Coins found near Southwood Lane and Muswell Hill Road point to a Roman presence in Muswell Hill. The earliest records date from the 12th century, when the Bishop of London gave land on the eastern side of Colney Hatch Lane to a recently founded order of nuns who built a chapel named Our Lady of Muswell. The name Muswell is thought to derive from a spring called the Mossy Well. By the 13th century the part of Barnet lying in Middlesex was called Little Barnet, later becoming Friern Barnet, a name that refers to the Knights of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. The opening of the Colney Hatch asylum in 1851 helped turn Friern Barnet into a suburb. Alexandra Palace opened in 1873 and spurred denser building in Muswell Hill.
