Balham has been settled since Saxon times and the Domesday Book records it as Belgeham, held by Geoffrey Orlateile, with land for one and a half ploughs and eight acres of meadow, rendering £2 in total. Maps of the 1600s show it as Ballam or Balham Manor within the parish of Streatham. Country retreats were built there in the 1700s but most growth followed the opening of the railway station in 1856. In Clapham Park Thomas Cubitt bought 229 acres of Bleak Hall Farm in 1825 and planned large villas, though some plots stayed empty until the First World War. On 14 October 1940 a bomb struck Balham Underground station, killing around 64 people. After 1945 most Cubitt houses were replaced following Blitz damage. A Provisional IRA bomb exploded in Balham on 17 July 1974 and nobody was hurt. Of 40 listed buildings nearby the Church of St Luke is Grade II*.
