A short history of SW19

People have lived at Wimbledon since the Iron Age at the latest. A charter of 967 names the village "Wimbedounyng" and the name is taken to mean Wynnman's hill. In 1086 Wimbledon lay within the manor of Mortlake, so the Domesday Book gave it no entry. The manor became crown property in 1398 and passed to the Cecil family in 1588. Robert Bell built Eagle House in 1613. The Dog and Fox became a stagecoach stop in the 18th century and the Surrey Iron Railway crossed Colliers Wood from 1803. A station opened in 1838 and moved growth away from the village. The wood that gave Colliers Wood its name was cleared by the mid-1890s. Wimbledon became a municipal borough in 1905 and joined Merton in 1965. Of 109 listed buildings, four are Grade II*: Eagle House, Church Of The Sacred Heart, The Old Rectory House and Parish Church Of St Mary.
