A short history of SW17

Tooting was settled before the Saxons and a Roman road from London to Chichester ran through it. Its Anglo-Saxon name has a disputed meaning. Æthelstan is thought to have confirmed Totinge to Chertsey Abbey in 933. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Totinges, where Haimo the Sheriff held Lower Tooting from the abbey with a church, 2½ ploughlands and 5 acres of meadow, rendering £4 yearly. Tooting Bec was a manor of Hellouin Bec Abbey with 5 hides assessed at £7. The De Gravenel family later gave Tooting Graveney its name. Summerstown had Wandle mills by the late Middle Ages and Dutchmen making kettles and frying pans by 1631. Building boomed in late Victorian times. Summerstown's St Mary's Church dates from 1903. Growth surged again in the 1920s and 30s. Of 36 listed buildings nearby only Gala Bingo Club is Grade I.
