Morden takes its name from Old English words for a hill set in marshland. The Roman road Stane Street crossed the area and small finds of coins and pottery have turned up. In 1015 Ethelstan the Etheling left land at Mordune to an abbey in his will. That land was where the first Saxon parish church, dedicated to St Lawrence, came to stand. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Mordone in Wallington Hundred held by Westminster Abbey. It lists 3 hides, a mill valued at £2 and 7 ploughs, with a render of £15 and fourteen residents. After the Dissolution the manor passed to Sir Richard Garth. Morden Park House was built in the 1770s for John Ewart. The Garth family kept the manor until 1872. The Underground station opened in 1926. Twelve listed buildings lie nearby including St Lawrence's Church at Grade I and Morden Park at Grade II*.
