A short history of SM3

Stane Street, the Roman road, runs along part of the edge of Cheam. Sutton Common was once open common land known as Sutton Heath, where local people grazed animals and gathered peat, turf and timber. Domesday Book records Cheam as Ceiham, under Archbishop Lanfranc of Canterbury. The entry lists four hides, a church, 17 ploughs, a mile of meadow and woodland for 25 hogs, with a yield of £14. Henry III granted Cheam town status by charter in 1259. In 1408 the Abbot of Chertsey and Nicholas Carew disputed lordship of the common and the judgment was that they would share lordship over a set area. In 1538 Henry VIII began Nonsuch Palace, with stone from Merton Priory carted along Sutton's boundary. Eighteen listed buildings lie near Cheam's centre. The Grade II* ones are the Church of St Dunstan, Whitehall and the Lumley Chapel.
