Parliamentary forces laid a bridge of boats to Fulham in 1642 and the church of St Mary the Virgin hosted the Putney Debates in 1647. Roehampton House (Grade I) was built from 1710 to 1712 and the first permanent bridge opened in 1729. Parkstead House and Mount Clare, both Grade I, followed in 1760 and 1772.
