A short history of Smethwick

The Domesday Book records the place as Smedeuuich. The name has been read as smiths' place of work, though a newer reading gives the settlement on smooth land. Smethwick remained a hamlet on the edge of Harborne until the 1700s closed. In 1732 a chapel of ease was consecrated there, first called Parkes' Chapel after Dorothy Parkes, who left money for it. Thomas Telford built Galton Bridge in 1829 and no bridge with one span stood higher anywhere at that time. Industry followed, including the London Works of Fox Henderson, which supplied the cast iron frame for the Crystal Palace before the firm went bankrupt in 1855. Air raids during the Second World War killed 80 people. Thirty-three listed buildings lie within a mile of the centre. Galton Bridge is Grade I and five are Grade II*, including Smethwick Old Church.
