A short history of Wednesbury

Wednesbury takes its name from Woden, a pre-Christian deity and the earliest authenticated spelling, Wodensbyri, appears on the back of a will copy dated 1004. A large ditch found in St Mary's Road may belong to an Iron Age hillfort. Battles are believed to have been fought here in 592 and 715 and Æthelflæd later fortified the town against the Danes. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Wadnesberie as a rural community that included Bloxwich and Shelfield. Coal pits were first recorded in 1315 and William Paget, later Secretary of State, was born here in 1505. John Wesley met violent opposition in 1743. The first Birmingham Canal reached the town's coalfields in 1769 and Brunswick Park opened in 1887. A Zeppelin raid on 31 January 1916 killed Joseph Smith and his three children. Council housing began in the early 1920s. The town has 11 Grade II listed buildings nearby, including the Church of St Bartholomew.
