A short history of Rowley Regis

The name Rowley comes from an Old English term for a rough wood or clearing. Roman silver coins found in an earthenware vessel show early presence and in the reign of King Cnut the land was described as wasted by war. Rowley is absent from the Domesday Book of 1086, probably because it was already a royal estate. Regis was added around 1140 to mark the part belonging to the King. The first stone church, dedicated to St Giles, was built between 1199 and 1216 and served as a chapel of ease to Clent until 1841. Coal mining began at Ramrod Colliery in 1855 alongside nail and chain making. Rowley Regis became an urban district in 1894. A church built in 1904 burned down in 1913 and the present St Giles Church dates from 1923. A borough was created in 1933. Four Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre, including Old Portway Farmhouse and its barn.
