A short history of Blackheath

Before 1841 Blackheath, then known as Bleak Heath or Blake Heath, was a handful of farms and inns beside the turnpike between Oldbury and Halesowen, within Rowley Regis. Through the rest of the 19th century developers expanded it as a dormitory town for nearby industry, notably the Coombes Wood coal mine and the Hailstone quarry. Workers came from across England and especially from Wales. A market was established and a station on the Great Western Railway extension linking Birmingham and Worcester opened in 1867. On 6 April 1959 about 30 Teddy Boys confronted a group of black people in the town, in the first major incident of its kind in the West Midlands motivated by race. The former Blackheath Public Library is a Grade II listed building near the centre.
