A short history of SE6
The name Catford has no known origin. One suggestion links it to cattle fording the River Ravensbourne in Anglo-Saxon times while another points to wild cats using that crossing. A Saxon community existed at Bellingham, which tenth-century charters call Beringaham. By 1198 Norman influence had changed the opening of the name from Ber to Bel. Streets such as King Alfred Avenue, Elfrida Crescent and Arnulf Street recall Alfred the Great and his extended family. Bellingham remained farmland for centuries until a railway station opened in 1892 and began its development. Between 1919 and 1923 the London County Council built a cottage estate on the former Bellingham Farm, with further building before the Second World War. Land east of the A21 was largely developed privately in the 1930s. Of 14 listed buildings near the centre, 13 are Grade II and the Church of St Andrew is Grade II*.
