A short history of SE23

Forest Hill had few residents until the middle of the 19th century and takes its name from "The Forest", a remnant of the Great North Wood. Honor Oak is named after an oak on One Tree Hill where Elizabeth I reputedly picnicked. The Croydon Canal opened in 1809 but its 28 locks stopped it succeeding commercially. The London & Croydon Railway Company bought it and used its route for a railway from London Bridge to Croydon that opened in 1839. After the Crystal Palace moved to Sydenham in 1854 many large houses were built in western Forest Hill and Honor Oak. A swimming pool opened on Dartmouth Road in 1884 and is London's oldest. Frederick Horniman built a museum for his natural history collection and gave it with its gardens to the public in 1901. There are 39 listed buildings nearby, 38 of them Grade II and the Horniman Museum Grade II*.
