A short history of SE4
The name Brockley comes from Old English and may mean Broca's woodland clearing or a stream by a wood. Towards the end of the 12th century the Premonstratensian order founded a small house here, which was transferred to Bayham in Sussex in 1208. A house stood on the site of Brockley Hall before 1745. The Stone House on Lewisham Way was built in 1773 by George Gibson the Younger. The Croydon Canal arrived in 1809 and development of the land below Lewisham Way began towards the end of the 1840s. Brockley station opened in 1871 and Crofton Park station in 1892, which gave Crofton Park its invented name. Brockley Hall was demolished after Maude Noakes died in 1931 and Wates built houses on the land. A V1 flying bomb destroyed Brockley Road School on 18 June 1944 and killed five Home Guard members. The area has 44 listed buildings. Two are Grade II* and they are Stone House and Hillyfields Sixth Form Centre.
