A short history of SE14

The area now called New Cross was first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Hacheham, where the Bishop of Lisieux held the manor as a tenant of the Bishop of Bayeux. The entry lists 3 hides, 3 ploughs, 6 acres of meadow and woodland worth 3 hogs and the manor rendered £2. Tithes went to Bermondsey Abbey from 1173 until the monasteries were dissolved and the Haberdashers' Company bought the manor in the 17th century. New Cross is believed to take its name from a coaching house called the Golden Cross and a tollgate was set up in 1718. A semaphore telegraph station built on the hill around 1795 gave Telegraph Hill its name and was removed in 1823. Most of the hill's housing went up around 1871. In 1944 a V-2 rocket killed 168 people at the Woolworths store in New Cross Road. Of 63 listed buildings nearby the Former Deptford Town Hall and Southwark Adult Education Institute are Grade II*.
