A short history of SE17
SE17 covers Walworth and the Elephant and Castle area. The name Walworth probably comes from Old English words for a Briton and a homestead. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Waleorde with Bainiard holding it under Archbishop Lanfranc of Canterbury. The entry lists 3½ hides, a church, four ploughs and 8 acres of meadow with a value of £3. A church of St Mary at Newington appears under that name in records from 1222. The Southwark Martyrs were put to death by burning in St George's Field in May 1557. The Elephant and Castle takes its name from a coaching inn that the earliest surviving record places here in 1765. The inn was rebuilt in 1816. St Peter's Church in Walworth was built around 1825 to a design by Sir John Soane. The inn was rebuilt again in 1898. The area was remodelled in the 1960s and a new phase of redevelopment began in the late 2000s.
