Chadwell was recorded in 1254 as Chaudewell, meaning the cold spring and named a hamlet. In the 14th century the de Merk family built the manor of Marks, which gave the nearby gate into Hainault Forest its name. Dagenham's Blackheath Common was renamed Chadwell Heath in the 17th century and by 1777 maps showed Marks Gate as a hamlet on the forest's southern edge. Chadwell Heath station opened in 1864 and suburban growth began in 1900, rapid until World War I and faster afterwards. In World War II a parachute mine destroyed a school in Bennett Road and a V2 rocket hit Blackbush Avenue. Six Grade II listed buildings stand nearby, including Warren Farm Barn.
