A short history of N17
Tottenham is believed to take its name from Tota, a farmer whose hamlet appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Toteham, in the hundred of Edmonton. About 70 families then lived in the manor, mostly labourers working for its lord. The settlement grew along Ermine Street. A poem called the Tournament of Tottenham dates from around 1400. From the Tudor period wealthy Londoners came for leisure and Henry VIII visited Bruce Castle. The area featured in Izaak Walton's The Compleat Angler in 1653. It stayed semi-rural until the 1870s, when workmen's trains turned fields and market gardens into housing. Tottenham became an urban district in 1894 and the Tottenham Outrage occurred in 1909. The area joined Haringey in 1965. Of 80 listed buildings nearby, Bruce Castle and its tower are Grade I.
