A short history of EN1
The crossroads that gave Bulls Cross its name is linked to a family named Bolle or Bull, who appear in legal documents from the 13th century. The place was recorded as Bedelscrosse in 1465 and Bullyscrosse in 1540. Bush Hill Park was farmland within an estate centred on Bush Hill Park House. In the 18th century the estate changed hands several times before coming to William Mellish, a trader who represented Middlesex in Parliament. It was broken up in 1875 when the North London Estates Company bought 373 acres. Houses were built from 1880 to 1886 and the company went bankrupt in 1887. Demand returned during the Boer War and the estate was complete by 1914. Ross McWhirter was murdered in Village Road in 1975. Of 48 listed buildings, three are Grade II*: the Church of St Andrew, Clarendon Cottage and the North East Building of Enfield Grammar School.
