A short history of N15
During the Ice Age the land that became Harringay lay at the edge of a large glacial mass. A Roman road ran north through the area and later marked the line between manors and then boroughs. The name comes from the Saxon period and refers to an enclosure belonging to a chieftain called Haering. It was written Harenhg' in about 1195. Forest covered much of the land until the Middle Ages when farming took over. From 1750 the pressure of London's growing population brought first leisure visitors and then settlers. In the mid-19th century the Great Northern Railway separated western Harringay from the rest of Hornsey. The Tottenham & Hampstead Junction Railway later shaped its southern edge. By 1900 the land was built over apart from Finsbury Park. In 1965 the creation of Haringey put the whole of Harringay under one authority. Of 17 listed buildings nearby, Church Of St Andrew, The Salisbury Public House and Parish Church Of St Ann are Grade II*.
