A short history of N13

Palmers Green began as a small hamlet in the parish of Edmonton, where Green Lanes meets Fox Lane. Local records name a Palmers Field in 1204 and a highway called Palmers Green in 1324. A Palmers Grove followed in 1340. A manor called Bowes is recorded in 1396, named after a family called Bowes. The name Palmers grene was written down in 1608 for a green linked with a family called Palmer. By 1801 the village had 54 buildings including two inns. A railway station opened in 1871 and Bowes Park developed from the 1880s. Local landowners would not part with their big estates until 1902, when large areas were released and rapid building began. The Fox public house has stood in its present form since 1904. Thirteen listed buildings lie nearby. Broomfield House, the east wall of Broomfield Park and the Parish Church of St John the Evangelist are all Grade II*.
