A short history of N19

The area around Hornsey Road appears in the Domesday Book as Tollington. By 1307 the stretch of the Great North Road through the north of Islington parish was called the Holloway, a name later given to the communities along it. Upper Holloway was one of several hamlets in the ancient parish of St Mary Islington. An Act of 1810 set up the Highgate Archway Company to build a tunnel avoiding Highgate Hill. The tunnel collapsed in April 1812 and John Nash devised the replacement, which opened on 21 August 1813. The Church of St John Upper Holloway was consecrated in 1828 and became a parish of its own in 1830. A cable tramway ran up Highgate Hill from 1884 to 1909 and a new bridge replaced Nash's structure in 1900. Of 67 listed buildings nearby, Cromwell House, its forecourt walls and the tomb of Karl Marx and family are Grade I.
