A short history of Lewisham
The earliest written mention of Lewisham, as liofshema in Old English, is a charter of 862 that set its boundary with Bromley. The name has been read as a dwelling among meadows. Around 918 Elthruda, a niece of King Alfred, gave the manor with Greenwich and Combe to St Peter's Abbey in Ghent and Lewisham became a cell of the abbey. In the mid-17th century the vicar Abraham Colfe set up two schools, one grammar and one primary, along with six almshouses for local people. George Legge bought the manor in the 17th century and his son William became Viscount Lewisham in 1711. The centre moved north after the North Kent line opened in 1849. A V-1 flying bomb struck the town centre in 1944, causing over 300 casualties including 51 deaths. In 1957 a rail crash near St Johns killed ninety people. Around the centre stand 415 listed buildings, with Boone's Chapel and The Ranger's House at Grade I.
