A short history of Southwark

Southwark grew up at the southern end of London Bridge, where the Romans built the first bridge around 43 AD and routed Stane Street and Watling Street into the area. The settlement was largely abandoned by the end of the fourth century. A fortified burh was created about 886 and in the 10th century the area was recorded as Suthriganaweorc, a name meaning a defensive work belonging to the people of Surrey. Between 1014 and 1016 the bridge played a part in the war between Ethelred and the Danish leaders Swein and Cnut. The 1086 Domesday Book records the place as Sudweca. By the 12th century it was an ancient borough and in 1900 it was separated administratively from the City. Listed buildings number 1156, with Grade I status held by Tower Bridge, The Monument and Southwark Cathedral.
