A short history of Wandsworth
The name comes from the River Wandle, which enters the Thames here. Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Wandesorde and Wendelesorde, meaning the enclosure of a man called Waendel. The manor was divided between St Wandrille's Abbey and William, son of Ansculfy, with 12 hides, 5 and a half ploughs and 22 acres of meadow, rendering £9. From at least the early 16th century Wandsworth took in successive groups of incomers, among them Protestant Dutch metalworkers in the 1590s and Huguenots in the 17th century. A gasworks was built beside the Thames in 1834 and a power station on The Causeway supplied electricity from 1897 to 1964. In the First World War Mayor Archibald Dawnay raised the 13th (Service) Battalion, East Surrey Regiment and Corporal Edward Foster won the Victoria Cross at Villers-Plouich on 24 April 1917. Of 328 listed buildings nearby, two are Grade I: the Church of St Mary and Gala Bingo Club.
