A short history of Greenwich

Saxons reused early burial mounds in Greenwich Park in the 6th century and a Roman site nearby yielded coins running from Claudius to the 5th century. The name first appears in a charter of 918 as Gronewic. During the reign of Æthelred the Unready a Danish fleet lay off the town for more than three years and in 1012 the invaders held Archbishop Alphege captive there before killing him. Domesday Book in 1086 lists Grenviz as a manor within a hundred of the same name, held by Bishop Odo of Bayeux. Under Henry V the place was still a fishing town. From the 15th century the Palace of Placentia stood here and Henry VIII and Elizabeth I were born at Greenwich. After the palace was demolished the Royal Naval Hospital, designed by Wren and Hawksmoor, replaced it. St Alfege's Church was completed in 1718. The hospital became the Royal Naval College in 1873.
