A short history of Bromley

Bromley appears in a charter of 862 as Bromleag, an Old English name for a woodland clearing where broom grew. That year Ethelbert, King of Kent, granted land that formed the Manor of Bromley, beginning a long link with the Bishops of Rochester. A market charter followed in 1158 and Bishop Gilbert Glanvill built Bromley Palace in 1185. Pilgrims visited St Blaise's Well. The bishops kept the palace until 1845 when the merchant Coles Child bought it and became lord of the manor. The railway reached Shortlands in 1858 and rapid growth followed, including suburbs such as Bickley. Bromley became a municipal borough in 1903 and joined the London Borough of Bromley in 1965. Around the centre stand 256 listed buildings including six at Grade I: Wickham Court, Sundridge Park, Bromley College, Holwood Mansion, the Gateway at Bromley College and Keston Windmill.
