A short history of Westminster

After Roman London lost its population in the 5th century a Saxon farming and trading settlement probably grew up to the west. It later declined and part of it came to be called Aldwych. The origins of Westminster pre-date the Norman Conquest. In the mid-11th century Edward the Confessor began building an abbey and placed a palace between it and the river, which fixed the seat of government there. From the sixteenth century houses spread over the adjoining fields and absorbed villages such as Marylebone and Kensington. In 1540 the abbey church briefly served as a cathedral and Westminster received city status, which it kept after the diocese ended in 1550. Banqueting House is Grade I listed.
