A short history of Hackney

Settlement and farming in Hackney go back to the Stone Age and in the late Iron Age the land belonged to the Catuvellauni tribe. After the Roman conquest three sarcophagus burials, one of marble, point to a high-status settlement. The name is Old English and probably arose in the Anglo-Saxon period. The Domesday Book of 1086 assessed Hackney only as a sub-manor of Stepney, a large manor held by the Bishop of London. The name is recorded as Hakney in 1231 and may mean Haka's island. From the Tudor period wealthy Londoners moved there. Sutton House was built in 1535 and a palace of Henry VIII stood at Brooke House. By 1605 the main village had as many houses as four neighbouring hamlets together. Of 540 listed buildings the Grade I ones include the Old Tower of the Former Church of St Augustine.
